Workers of a garment factory on Saturday staged a protest movement and demonstration in Gazipur demanding their due salary and earned leave.
At that time, the agitated workers of “Mahmud Jeans Garment Factory” took hostage the senior officials of the factory.
Around 4,500 workers of the factory in the Chandra area of the upazila staged this protest demanding their outstanding dues.
The movement continued from 9am to 2pm.
According to the police and aggrieved workers, the authorities of the factory paid the workers 40% of their basic salary for January.
In the morning, the workers entered the factory and held the senior officials and other staff hostage demanding the remaining 60% salary without joining the work.
Later, when the owners and the police promised to sit for talks, the workers stopped their agitation.
The factory owners assured the workers to pay the rest salary by next Thursday.
To avoid any untoward situation, a team of Industrial police and a team from Kaliakor police station have been deployed in the area.
Nitai Chandra Sarkar, Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Gazipur Industrial Police, Kaliakor Zone, said that the workers of the factory staged a demonstration for payment of arrears and annual (earned) leave.
Despite the assurance of payment of all dues after negotiating with the owners, the workers are still protesting peacefully.
Arman Chowdhury, Chief Business Officer of the factory, said that 40% of the workers' basic salary was paid on Thursday. The remaining 60% salary will be paid next Thursday.
The angry workers protested against this decision, said the official.
