Several teams of Detective Branch (DB) of police and Kotwali police station have allegedly been raiding the houses of public representatives at various levels of Jessore district and threatening them.

The raids follow a press conference that took place on Thursday, where public representatives called for the removal of Jessore Superintendent of Police (SP) Proloy Kumar Joarder and Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl SP) Belal Hussain.

The raids were reportedly carried out from Thursday night to Friday noon, and were led by the Addl SP Belal Hossain.

Vice Chairman of Sadar Upazila Parishad (UP) Anwar Hossain Bipul alleged that police have been threatening the public representatives since they demanded the removal of officials.

He said that police went to the houses of Jessore Municipality Ward Councillor Rajibul Alam, Chairman of Churamankati UP Daud Hossain Dafadar, Chairman of Lebutla UP Alimuzzaman Milan, and Ramnagar Union Parishad Chairman Mahmud Hasan on Friday night and threatened them not to conduct their pre-announced human chain program.

"Police were in front of my house since Friday morning. Besides, several police teams went to the houses of Upashahar Union Chairman Ehsanur Rahman Litu, Narendrapur Union Parishad Chairman Raju Ahmed and most of the public representatives since morning,” he said.

On Thursday, the public representatives announced a strike demanding the removal of Jessore SP Proloy Kumar Joarder and Addl SP Belal Hussain at a press conference held at the Jessore Municipal Hall.

The organizers said they would form a human chain on Friday and a protest march on Saturday, followed by a protest rally the next day, pressing home their demand. They also threatened programs like hartal and blockade if their demand was not met.

Jessore Municipality Panel Mayor Sheikh Moksimul Bari Opu read a written statement at the press conference.

It cited instances of harassment and vandalism targeting municipal councillors and other government officials.
