Five more inmates fall sick at Tongi Child Development Centre

  • One teen inmate died on Wednesday
  • Family claimed torture

At least five more inmates of Tongi Child Development Centre in Gazipur have fallen sick. 

They were admitted to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi at around 8:30am on Thursday.

The inmates are Ferdous, 18, Sifat, 15, Tamim, 18, Malu Maung, 16, and Usai Ching, 17. 

Faruk Hossain, a doctor of the emergency department of Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital, said one of the patients undergoing treatment at the hospital is suffering from diarrhoea and the other four are suffering from fever.

Delwar Hossain, caretaker of Tongi Child Development Centre, said many inmates are falling sick. “Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital Tariq Hasan has come to see the sick inmates.”

In this regard, RMO Tariq Hasan said he was at the hospital and more details could be known once the patients were examined.

On Wednesday, an inmate of the centre, Maruf Ahmed, 15, died while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.  

Maruf’s family blamed the centre's authorities for the death and claimed he was tortured there.

In this regard, Delwar Hossain, caretaker of Tongi Child Development Centre, said a probe body has been formed over Maruf’s death.

“The members of the investigation committee visited the centre on Thursday afternoon.”

The director of Tongi Child Development Centre also visited the place following Maruf’s death.
