The supporters of Jahangir Alam Khokon, the chairman of Mawna Union Parishad in Sreepur, on Wednesday night, blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway as he was arrested for allegedly hindering the construction work of a company and extortion.

Khokon was arrested on Wednesday at around 10:45pm, after Jahirul Islam, the manager of Fortune Cables Industries Limited factory in Mawna, filed a case against the chairman, two of his associates, and some 10 to 12 unknown individuals for obstructing their work and demanding Tk20 lakh.

The other accused in the case are Bayezid, 30, and Tajuddin, 50.

Mizanur Rahman Raihan, son of Chairman Jahangir Alam Khokon, alleged that his father was arrested in a false case. “He is a victim of conspiracy.”

As the news of the chairman’s arrest spread, his supporters set fire in several places on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and blocked the road at night.

According to the case statement, the accused asked for money and physically assaulted the plaintiff. They also strangled him and locked him in a room. Later, police rescued the plaintiff from the spot.
