Another mortar shell has been recovered at the Ghumdhum border in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban.

Naikhongchhari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Mannan confirmed the matter and said: “Another mortar shell was recovered on Friday afternoon from the Tumbru west coast area of Ghumdhum Union.”

On Thursday afternoon, an unexploded mortar shell was recovered from the Nowapara area of Ghumdhum.

On Friday afternoon, locals spotted another mortar shell in the paddy field near Tumbru Paschimkul BGB camp and informed the administration. Later, BGB members came to the spot and took it into their custody.

It is believed that members of Myanmar's Border Guard Force (BGP) left the shells behind while fleeing to Bangladesh in the wake of the conflict in Myanmar.

On Monday, two people were killed by a mortar shell fired from Myanmar in the Ghumdhum area inside Bangladesh. A case was filed with Naikhongchhari Police Station concerning the incident on Tuesday. On the same day, several bullets and a mortar shell landed in the mango orchard of Syed Noor of Madhyampara. However, no casualties were reported.

According to BGB and local sources, several armed groups, including the Arakan Army, have intensified fighting with the Myanmar military in the border areas of Bangladesh and India in the last few weeks.
