Ex-Chhatra League leaders among 6 arrested for selling Indian alcoholic beverages in Gazipur

The Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested six people, including a former Chhatra League leader, for selling Indian alcoholic beverages from a truck in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.

The police seized 125 bottles of beverages of various Indian brands worth about Tk7.5 lakh at the time of their arrest in the early hours of Sunday in the Patharpar area of ​​Mauna union, Delwar Hossain, the officer-in-charge of Gazipur DB, said on Monday.

The arrested are Saif Shahriar Abhi, 26, former general secretary of the Mauna Pier Ali College Chhatra League, Ashraful, 23, former Chhatra League activist, Asadul Islam Roni, 26, Rezaul Karim, 26, Shahid Mia, 25, and Limon Mia, 23.

DB Sub-Inspector (SI) Mehdi Hasan said Saif Shahriar Abhi through Rezaul Karim of Netrakona brought foreign liquor in drums filled with sand in trucks from the border area of ​​Durgapur upazila in Rajshahi to Mauna in Sreepur. 

Upon being tipped off, police carried out a raid there and arrested them along with 125 bottles of liquor, he added. 

OC Delwar Hossain said a case has been filed against the arrestees under the Narcotics Act with Sreepur police station.
