The second master of the ferry, Anjuman, has been suspended in connection with the sinking of Rajanigandha, the utility ferry that had sunk in the Padma River near Manikganj's Paturia along with nine pickup trucks and covered vans a week ago.
Besides, the ferry rescue operation has been officially declared over.
BIWTC Chairman Dr AKM Matiur Rahman confirmed the information to the reporters after visiting the recovered ferry Rajanigandha around 12pm on Thursday.
He said: “The rescue ferry was not much damaged. The ferry will be taken to the Narayanganj dockyard. Hopefully, the ferry will be able to go on its own, but if not, it will be towed by another vessel. The rescue operation was officially completed today (Thursday).”
“Anjuman, the second master of the ferry, was suspended two days ago in connection with the sinking of the ferry. Apart from this, the cause of the sinking of the ferry will be known precisely after receiving the investigation report,” he added.
Rajanigandha, the utility ferry that had sunk in the Padma River near Manikganj's Paturia along with nine pickup trucks and covered vans a week ago, was salvaged late on Wednesday.
The ferry was retrieved by the rescue ship Prottoy around 11pm after being completely refloated in the Padma an hour earlier.
Later, it was taken to the bank of Padma in the Nayakandi area of Paturia ghat.
On January 17, the ferry with pickup trucks and covered vans capsized on the Daulatdia-Paturia route in the middle of the Padma River in Paturia of Manikganj.
