Bus movement on Rajshahi-Rangpur route remains suspended

  • Alleges extortion in name of local association
  • Meeting ended without agreement
Update : 19 Jan 2024, 09:20 PM

The movement of buses between Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions remained suspended since Thursday as a result of the owners' and workers' disagreement during a meeting.

The incident has caused immense public suffering.

The meeting held at Rangpur Divisional Road Transport Owners Association’s office on Thursday evening ended without reaching an agreement.

Buses and minibuses from Rajshahi division's eight districts did not depart for the Rangpur division. Vehicles from different districts in Rajshahi division are returning from Bogra.

On the other hand, the movement of buses bound for Dhaka has returned to normal.

Rajshahi Divisional Road Transport Owners Association General Secretary Aminul Islam said in Gaibandha, buses arriving from Kurigram faced hindrances and extortion under the pretext of the local owners and workers association.

“In a show of solidarity with Kurigram and Rangpur, a collective decision was made to suspend the operation of all buses, coaches, and minibuses in Rajshahi division. Consequently, as of Thursday morning, vehicles from eight districts, including Bogra in Rajshahi division, are refraining from traveling to Rangpur division,” he said.

Rajshahi Divisional Road Transport Owners Association Vice President and Bogra District Executive President Taufiq Hasan Maina said: “Labour leaders and transport owners from Kurigram, Syedpur, and Nilphamari attended the meeting. The meeting has been rescheduled for Saturday at 2pm.”

He hopes that the deadlock will be resolved in that meeting.
