With the increasing severity of chilling weather across Bangladesh for the last few days, the pressure of cold-related patients has increased in hospitals of Khulna district.

Among the patients, children and elderly people are more affected by the bone-biting cold.

Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Imtiaz Ahmed of Khulna Shishu Hospital said that children are suffering from cold-related diseases. The pressure of sick children in the hospital has also increased.

On Sunday, 650 patients were given treatment in the outdoor department of the hospital.

Besides, 700 people received treatment on Wednesday.

Along with this, over 250 children are undergoing treatment at the pediatric department of the hospital.

Residential Medical Officer of Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) Dr Suhas Ranjan Halder said that currently 70-80% of the patients admitted to this hospital are due to cold. However, most of them are children and old people.

An average of 1500-1600 patients are being admitted to this hospital daily. Though, there was also death due to cold, statistics could not be kept. Because, due to winter, asthma problems increase, cough increases, fever causes pneumonia. But only that disease is detected after death, said the physician.

Meanwhile, low-income and marginalized people are suffering more in winter.

Besides, the demand for winter clothes has increased to prevent the severity of chilling weather.

A rickshaw driver Almas Zorddar said that their condition is severe in the bone-chilling weather.  The sunlight was not seen on Wednesday. The same situation has been going on for a few days. But, they need to leave the houses for the sake of family.

Senior meteorologist Amirul Azad, in-charge of Khulna regional meteorological office, said that the minimum temperature of Khulna was recorded at 12 °C on Wednesday.

Besides, the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.8 °C in Chuadanga of Khulna division.

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature in Khulna was 11.3°C, which is the lowest temperature in Khulna this year.
