A local Chhatra Dal leader attended his father's funeral in fetters by prison authorities on Saturday.
The incident took place in the West Subidkhali village of Mirzapur upazila in Patuakhali.
The Joint Convener of the Mirzaganj upazila unit of Chhatra Dal, Nazmul Mridha, was brought out of the Patuakhali District Jail at about 3pm to attend his father Motaleb Hossain Mridha's funeral rites, or namaz-e-janaza.
Motaleb Hossain, 65, died while undergoing treatment at Mridha Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Nazmul was taken into custody on December 20, in connection with a case brought under the Explosives Substances Act. He was then sent to Patuakhali jail.
The court released him on parole on Saturday from 1pm to 5pm to attend his father's funeral. The handcuffs were removed during the funeral, but the police did not remove the leg shackles.
Patuakhali District Prison Jailer Mustafa Kamal said that because of the police's appeal, the police took him in handcuffs and brought him to jail, thinking about security.
Mirzaganj Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman said: “His leg shackles were not removed for the sake of safety.”
