At least 72 people injured in incidents of post-election violence have been admitted to Barisal Sher-e Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in the last three days.

It is alleged that despite the increase in violence, no steps are being taken by the police to improve law and order.

These patients have been admitted to different units of the Surgery and Orthopedics Departments of Barisal Sher-e Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Half of the injured patients are from Barisal city; the others are from different upazilas of Barisal division.

Sudhir Dhali, one of the injured, alleged that he was wounded by activists of independent candidates at Amin Bari Madrasa Center in Ward No. 2 of the city.

He also alleged that the police failed to take effective steps and save the victims by preventing attacks in various places.

Rubel Howladar, a resident of Ward No. 6 of BCC and supporter of the independent candidate, said that the Boat supporters, led by Jasim Biswas, beat him and hacked at him with sharp weapons. He was rescued by local people and admitted to Surgery unit-II of SBMCH on the day of the election.

Rahat Khalifa, a supporter of the Boat candidate, admitted to the Orthopedics unit of the hospital, said when he entered the vote center at 2:30pm on the day of the election, the supporters of the independent candidate beat him and broke his arm.

Although some injured people were admitted to SBMCH and are undergoing treatment here, those with minor injuries were released after first aid, said Dr Saiful Islam, director SBMCH.

Barisal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Jihadul Kabir expressed his surprise at such a large number of people injured in election violence being admitted to SBMCH, and said that he is verifying the information.

The BMP commissioner further said messages are being sent to different units of the law enforcing agencies, instructing them to take hard steps in improving the law and order situation and preventing the situation from getting out of control.
