A school designated as a polling centre was set on fire by unidentified individuals in Sonagazi upazila of Feni on Friday morning, with the 12th general election slated for Sunday.

One of the rooms of the centre was partially damaged in the fire, but no polling booths had been set up there, and election equipment has yet to reach the centre.

Returning Officer Shahina Akter said police patrols had been increased to protect the election centre.

Sonagazi model police station Officer-in-Charge Sudeep Roy said the fire service had brought the blaze under control within half an hour, adding that no one had been injured in the fire.

The OC said the police suspected that someone might have committed arson to burn some school documents.

“No election equipment has arrived here yet. We will investigate whether it happened due to the election.”
