At least 10 people, including a journalist, were injured when BNP activists attacked people and detonated three cocktails during the party’s rally at Bhanga Jame Masjid in Rangpur on Saturday night.
Abu Aslam, Rangpur correspondent for Desh TV, was attacked while filming the incident. Upon receiving information, police rushed to the spot. Media workers and activists have demanded the arrest of the attackers.
After the incident, panic and fear spread among locals.
Police and witnesses said the BNP called for a hartal in Rangpur city on Sunday, demanding the release of its leaders and activists.
In support of the hartal, around 7:30pm, around 50 to 60 BNP leaders and activists detonated several cocktails and attacked pedestrians, rickshaw pullers, and auto-rickshaw drivers.
Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Montasir Billah said: "We are collecting photos of the attackers and steps are being taken to arrest them."
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Maruf Ahmed said: “Strict action will be taken against those involved in the incident.”
