Tangail-5: Six candidates face 57 cases

Of the 11 candidates who submitted nomination forms for the Tangail-5 constituency, six have at least 57 cases filed against them on various charges.

After scrutinizing their nomination papers, the district election office revealed the information on Monday, the last day of the scrutiny. 

Of the 11, the EC has canceled the nominations of two independent candidates. They are Khandker Ahsan Habib and Nigar Hossain Tonmoy.

District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Kaiserul Islam told Dhaka Tribune that the duo can appeal against the decision. 

According to sources, there are two cases filed against Jatiya Party (JaPa) nominated candidate Mozammel Huq, who is also the general secretary of the district unit. Of the two cases, he was exempted from one and the other is currently being heard at the High Court.

There are 24 cases against independent candidate Murad Siddique. Of the cases, he was exempted from 18 while acquitted in six cases. 

Meanwhile, Awami League-nominated candidate Mamun-Or-Rashid was acquitted in the single case he was sued in. He is also a presidium member of Jubo League’s central committee. 

There are nine cases against expelled BNP leader and independent candidate Khandker Ahsan Habib. He is a Supreme Court lawyer. All the nine cases against him are currently under court proceedings. 

Three-time mayor of Tangail municipality, and Organizing Secretary of district AL Jamilur Rahman Miron has 16 cases filed against him. He submitted his nomination paper as an independent candidate. He has already been acquitted in 15 cases while the other case is underway.

Member of Parliament and district AL Vice President Sanowar Hossain filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate. There are five cases against him with local police stations of which he was acquitted in three cases and exempted from two others.

There are no cases against Trinamool BNP leader Sharifuzzaman Khan Mohabbat, BNM’s candidate Touhidur Rahman Chaklader, Zaker Party candidate Dulal Mia, independent candidates Hasrat Khan Bhasani and Nigar Hossain Dulal.
