  • Police constable killed at level crossing in Jamalpur
Update : 03 Dec 2023, 11:28 PM

Road and railway crashes left four people, including an LGED engineer, dead in three separate crashes from Saturday midnight till Sunday.

In Panchagarh, Abu Sayeed, an LGED engineer in Pirganj Upazila of Thakurgaon, died on the spot as his car fell into a roadside ditch on Saturday night.

Three other government officials—UNO Fazle Rabbi, Upazila Social Welfare Officer Al Amin, and ICT Assistant Programmer Nabiul Karim Sarkar—who accompanied Abu Sayeed were injured in the incident.

The four were going to Panchagarh from Tetulia on Saturday midnight when the car fell into the ditch in the Chekormari area under Panchagarh Sadar, Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Prodip Kumar Roy said.

Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Jahurul Islam and Superintendent of Police (SP) SM Sirajul Huda rushed to the spot shortly after the accident.

The driver of the UNO's vehicle retired from service recently. It remains uncertain why four staff members were travelling so late in the night without their official driver.

Meanwhile, a police constable was killed and another injured after a local train hit a police van at a rail crossing in Jamalpur's Sadar Upazila around 4:15am. Locals alleged that the gate of the crossing was not closed, which caused the accident.

The deceased was identified as Ahsanul Haque, 32, son of Nazrul Islam. The injured police constable was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical condition, Md Mahabbat Kabir, OC of the Sadar police station, said.

In Bagerhat, two people were killed and two others injured in a collision between a bus and a motorcycle at Baitpur of Sadar upazila on the Bagerhat-Pirojpur Highway in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Rony Hawlader, 24, and Rabbi Khan, 25. The injured were identified as Faisal and Mizan.

The four were coming to Bagerhat town by motorcycle to appear before a court.

Mizanur Rahman, OC of Bagerhat Katakhali Highway police station, said the bus of Dhansiri Paribahan collided head-on with the motorcycle.

Doctors at Bagerhat District Hospital pronounced them dead on arrival. Later, the injured were sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Police seized the bus but could not arrest the driver.

In Mirsarai, Chittagong, a cargo train was derailed, resulting in a delay in service in the afternoon. However, no one was injured in the incident.

Local people said that the four wheels of the train got derailed, but the driver immediately slowed down the train.

Zakir Mustafiz Milu from Thakurgaon and Bishwajit Deb from Jamalpur contributed to the report.
