A sub-inspector of police has been closed for greeting the Awami League-nominated candidate with a bouquet in Rajshahi ahead of the January 7 polls.
The action was taken after a photograph of SI Jillur Rahman, also in charge of the investigation, greeting AL candidate for Rajshahi-4, Professor Abdul Kalam Azad, went viral on social media.
Abul Kalam Azad is also the mayor of Taherpur municipality.
The photo went viral on social media on Friday night, and the police official was closed and attached to Bagmara Police Lines the next day.
Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bagmara police station, said that the police official in question has claimed that the photograph was old and had been circulated recently. But since it has created criticism among the netizens, the SI has been closed.
Rafikul Islam, additional superintendent of police in Rajshahi, told Dhaka Tribune that there were multiple allegations against the SI already. Meanwhile, time had come for his transfer as well. Action has been taken against him after he was found guilty in the primary investigation, he said.
