Three people were killed when a speeding covered van hit a mini pickup and two battery-powered auto-rickshaws parked on the side of the highway.
The accident took place at Mirsharai’s Sufiaror area on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at around 10:30am on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as van driver Faridul Islam, 33, pick-up driver Iqbal Hossain, 48, and Shahidul Islam, 32.
Among them, Iqbal and Faridul were killed on the spot. Shahidul died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Police arrested the driver of the covered van, Rasel Mia, 35, from the spot. He is the son of Fazlu Mia of Gopalpur upazila of Tangail district.
Zorarganj Highway police outpost Officer-in-Charge Sohel Sarkar said: "Two bodies were found at the scene. One person succumbed at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The accident is thought to be caused by the covered van driver's drowsiness. The driver has been detained, and the vehicle was seized."
The bodies were handed over without a post-mortem on the request of the families. A case is being filed accordingly.
