The police have arrested six people in a case filed over the killing of a local Jubo League leader in Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha.

Abul Hossain, the father of deceased Zahidul Islam, filed the case at Sundarganj police station late on Monday, accusing 43 named and unnamed individuals, including 23 activists of the BNP and Jamaat.

The six arrestees include two persons named in the case.

Sundarganj police station Officer-in-Charge KM Azmiruzzaman said there are several ongoing cases against those two people – Samiul Islam Samu and Anwar Hossain.

The police are trying to arrest the other accused, he added.

Zahidul Islam, 38, president of the Sonora union unit of Jubo League, was hacked to death late on Sunday.

Another man named Kabir Mia, 35, was also injured in the incident.

The incident took place at around 11:30pm when Zahidul was on a motorcycle with Kabir.

When they reached the local Mara Bridge, seven to eight people intercepted the motorcycle and stabbed Zahidul multiple times. They also cut the ligaments of his arms and legs. Kabir was attacked with a stick and received severe injuries.

Locals took both of them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where Zahidul named some of the attackers. They are Musa, Samu, Imtiaz and Khademul, all reportedly involved with local BNP-Jamaat politics.

Zahidul died at the hospital at around 3:45am on Monday due to excessive bleeding.
