The miscreants set ablaze the five railway sleepers over the Golaghat (Matikata) river in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on the Dhaka-Mymensingh railway.
The fire incident took place at the Matikata railway bridge in the early hours of Monday.
Assistant Executive Engineer of Bangladesh Railway's Mymensingh Division Akram Ali confirmed this. He said: “On receiving the information, our repairmen reached the spot in no time. They removed the burnt sleepers and attached the new ones quickly.”
Locals said that the miscreants set fire to the Golaghat (Matikata) railway bridge by burning tires on Sunday night. The railway staff saw the fire and extinguished it with the help of local people. Sreepur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tariqul Islam visited the spot after receiving the news.
Gateman Sohel Mia, in charge of gate number 7 of the Kawraid railway station area, said: “The miscreants set fire to something like a tire and left it on the railway track. It burns five sleepers. At 6:30am, Balaka Express and Yamuna Express trains crossed the bridge at risk.”
Jaidebpur railway police outpost in-charge Shahidullah said: “Miscreants set fire to the railway bridge early in the morning. Locals put off the fire. Rail transportation is normal now.”
Sreepur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Fazal Nasim said: “After getting the news of arson, police visited the spot. Legal action will be taken in this regard.”
