Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday inaugurated the first unit of Matarbari 1,200 MW Ultra-Supercritical Coal Based Power Plant at Moheshkhali upazila of Cox's Bazar.

It was a project of the Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL).

The first unit of the power plant is scheduled to go into commercial production in January 2024 and the second unit in July 2024.

After the inauguration ceremony, Minister of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said: “Uninterrupted electricity at an affordable price is essential for the development of the country. Large power plants are required to provide uninterrupted power. At the same time, the use of technology needs to be increased.

“This is undoubtedly a huge challenge. To face this challenge, there must be continuity of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added.

The minister further said: “The mega project of Matarbari will add a new dimension to the economic development of Bangladesh. Through this, there will be massive development in the social and economic sectors of this area.”

As a part of energy diversification in the country's power sector and the implementation of the government's master plan, Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) has taken the initiative to construct coal-based power plants using the latest ultra-supercritical technology.

Earlier, the initial firing of the first unit of the power plant was completed on June 4 and the second unit on October 22.

Experimental power supply to the national grid started from the first unit of the power plant on July 29.
