Autorickshaw driver survives Chittagong crash that killed 7

  • Undergoing treatment at CMCH
  • Deceased included three children

Seven passengers of a CNG-run autorickshaw were killed in a head-on collision with a bus in Hathazari upazila of Chittagong on Tuesday, but the driver of the three-wheeler, Biplab Majumdar, 28, somehow survived.

The fatal accident took place at noon on Tuesday in the Charia area of the upazila, leaving seven of the nine onboard dead.

The deceased were Chinu Dash, 55, Biplab, 27, Rita, 40, Srabanti, 18, Varsha, 10, Deep, 3, and Diganta, 3.

Ankhi Majumder, wife of the injured driver, said: “Biplab left home with the autorickshaw at 10am. Around 1pm, my elder sister, Jayashree, called me on the phone to say that my husband had been in a road accident. We rushed to the spot. At first, he was admitted to Hathazari Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for better treatment.”

Nazirhat highway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Adil Mahmud told Dhaka Tribune the autorickshaw had been on its way from Bhatiari to Fatikchhari via Baradighi and the bus from Fatikchhari to Chittagong city.

The collision occurred when the three-wheeler was near Charia Board Govt Primary School in the area, he added.
