The chairman of the Payrabond union council in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur was hacked to death late on Sunday.
Mithapukur police station Officer-in-Charge confirmed the death of Chairman Mahbubur Rahman and said the police later detained the main perpetrator, Harun, with the help of locals.
According to witnesses and police sources, Harun along with a group of men attacked the UP chairman when he was returning home after closing his pharmacy.
He was rescued and taken to the local upazila health complex first. However, he was declared dead upon arrival at Rangpur Medical College Hospital when he was taken there after his condition deteriorated.
Meanwhile, local residents caught Haurn with a cleaver and turned him over to the police.
OC Mostafizar said police were questioning him at the police station.
Additional forces were deployed in the area to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents.
