Five members of a family sustained burn injuries as a fire broke out apparently from a gas line leak at Aukoba Bazar in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj on Friday night.
The injured- Hason Banu, 55, her husband Oli Ahmed, 65, son Omar Faruk, 18, daughter Sahera Begum, 24, and brother Sona Uddin, 45, are now undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Hasun is a housewife while her husband and brother run a dry fish shop in Gausia market. Their daughter is physically challenged and son is a garment worker.
Nure Alam, nephew of Hasun, said his aunt set up a device to increase flow of gas at the house around two weeks back due to low pressure of gas.
About 11pm, while they were asleep in the house, a blast caused the fire to start, according to him.
Hearing this, nearby residents hurried to the scene, transporting the injured to Rupganj's US-Bangla Hospital before they were transferred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
According to doctors, Hason suffered 46% burns, Oli 58%, Sahera 30%, Omar 15%, and Sona Uddin 90%.
Their conditions were deemed critical, according to Md Bacchu Miah, the in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost.
Fire Service and Civil Defense personnel inspected the area, according to ASM Sayed, the officer in charge of the Rupganj police station.
