  • Passengers opting for night to travel safely
Update : 02 Nov 2023, 10:15 AM

On the second day of the BNP-Jamaat's three-day nationwide blockade, Inter-district terminals remained empty and long-distance buses were operating at night to avoid the risk of vandalism and arson attack.

Nonetheless, bus terminal officials said passengers are also opting for night to travel safely.

On Wednesday evening, a visit to Saidabad, Mohakhali inter-district bus terminal showed that passengers started coming to the bus counters.

Ujjal Sheikh, counter master of Ekta Paribahan in Saidabad, said: "We are not running the bus in the morning due to the risk of vandalism during the blockade. Moreover, passengers are also buying more tickets on scheduled buses at night during this time. We ran five buses last night and we will run three buses tonight."

Nuru, in charge of the Shyamoli bus counter, said: "There were few passengers in the morning, but it's gradually increasing. We expect more passengers in the evening."

This correspondent visited the Mohakhali inter-district bus terminal in the afternoon and observed that the bus terminal was empty on Wednesday like it was on Tuesday. Many were closing their counters and going home.

Hasan Talukdar, the manager of Unity Paribahan on the Dhaka to Gaibandha route, said:, "Yesterday, we had one passenger. Today, we have not had a single passenger all day, even though it's 3pm in the afternoon. Running a vehicle is expensive, and with just two passengers, we can't cover those costs."

Hriday, counter master of Poly Paribahan on the Dhaka to Ruhumari (Kurigram) route said: "I have not been able to run a bus yet. There is a possibility of two buses in the night.  But it will depend on the passenger.”

The manager of Ena Paribahan's Mymensingh route said: "The number of passengers is the same as yesterday. We aim to restart bus services by tomorrow afternoon."
