An activist of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of BNP, was reportedly killed as his motorbike overturned after being chased by police during a blockade in Dakkhin Surma upazila of Sylhet district on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Zillur Rahman, 40, son of Elias Mia of Golapganj upazila. He was a member of Golapganj Jubo Dal Convening Committee.
Meanwhile, Sylhet District and Metropolitan Unit Jubo Dal called a daylong hartal for Wednesday protesting the death of Dilu, said Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, president of Sylhet district unit BNP.
A motorbike carrying Zillur overturned after being chased by police at 8:30am while crossing Lalabazar area.
Later, he was taken to Osmani Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead around 1 pm.
Zillur was arrested after being injured and died under police custody, said Emran Ahmed, general secretary of Sylhet district unit BNP.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Md Elias Sharif said: “Zillur died after hitting a tree.”
He said as far as his knowledge, there were no police members at that location at that time.
