In Gazipur, the labor movement has entered its eighth day, with demonstrators advocating for a maximum monthly salary of Tk23,000 and protesting the deaths of workers.

Hundreds of workers, predominantly 12 to 14-year-old children, gathered in the Malek Bari area along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway since the Tuesday morning.

Most garment factories across all industrial zones in Gazipur district remained closed. The recent deaths of two workers have fueled a heightened level of unrest within the labor movement.

Amidst the situation, agitators blocked the road in a few places of Dhaka-Mymensingh highway by setting tires on fire and vandalizing vehicles.

Due to security concerns, vehicular movements were seen limited in the area. Long-distance transportation services have been suspended, while smaller public transports on the highways are charging additional fares.

However, freight vehicles continue to operate on the Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Tangail, and Dhaka-Sylhet highways.

Some garment factory owners are seen stationed with sticks in front of various facilities along the highway.

While police are deployed in front of larger factories, local residents have taken it upon themselves to guard smaller establishments with makeshift measures.

Inspector Mir Rakibul Haque, in-charge of Gazipur Industrial Police, said that due to the labor movement, approximately 150 factories in the Konabari area have been shut down at the directive of the owners.

Gazipur Industrial Police Inspector Rezaul Karim said police are trying their best to control the situation.
