Update : 26 Oct 2023, 11:11 PM

Thousands of people cross the level crossing at the Tebaria College intersection in Kumarkhali municipality of Kushtia every day even after knowing that this can be the last time they walk on this path

The crossing has no gatekeepers for  long time, making it a hotspot for accidents.

Not far from the spot are a school and the main habitat of the suburb. The locals are not moved by the unsafe traveling on the road any longer as it has been going on like this for a long time. There are witnesses of many crashes on this crossing, they told this reporter.

The railway authorities are keeping mum on the issue.

There is a room and toilet made for the gatekeeper at the crossing but it also shows a hanging sign that cautions locals to cross the level at their own risk.

The iron bar was not brought down at the crossing when a train approached. The locals were seen waiting on either side of the crossing for the train to pass.

Tea seller Ripon Ali said they witness accidents at the crossing almost every day now. He said this must change immediately.

Another local resident Rafikul Islam said that a bike was run over by a train recently on the spot.

Station master Md Shafiqul Islam said there are eight rail gates in Kumarkhali. Of these eight, the level crossing at the Tebaria College intersection is unmanned due to a shortage of manpower.

Local Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Bitan Kumar Mandal said he has inspected the spot and contacted senior officials for immediate remedy.
