One man died due to the collapsing of a wall in Ward No. 7 of Cox's Bazar city caused by the cyclonic storm Hamoon on Tuesday.
Mayor Mahbubur Rahman of Cox's Bazar Municipal confirmed the information, adding that several others sustained injuries from falling trees and walls during the cyclone's onslaught.
Cyclone Hamoon struck Cox's Bazar coast after 7pm, bringing continuous strong winds and thunderous rain until 9:30pm. The powerful winds caused widespread uprooting of trees and extensive damage to houses and infrastructure in Cox's Bazar city and its surrounding areas.
Numerous trees were toppled, including those in the vicinity of the district commissioner's office, disrupting vehicular movement. The entire area, including Cox's Bazar city, experienced a power outage from the evening.
Muhammad Shaheen Imran, the deputy commissioner of Cox's Bazar, reported significant damage to houses and trees in the district due to the stormy winds and heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Hamoon. Specific details about the extent of the damage are expected to be provided on Wednesday.
