Cyclone Hamoon makes landfall in Bangladesh

The highly severe cyclonic storm Hamoon began its landfall along the Cox's Bazar and Chittagong coasts at 6pm on Tuesday.

Cyclone Hamoon hit the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar coastline, with wind speeds of approximately 148km/h, showing signs of weakening.

The center of Cyclone Hamoon reached the coast around 9pm, Cox's Bazar BMD office Assistant Meteorologist Mohammad Imam Uddin said.

According to a special bulletin issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the very severe cyclonic storm is currently positioned approximately 285 kilometres southwest of Chittagong port, 250 kilometres southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 235 kilometres south of Mongla port, and 180 kilometres south of Payra port.

The storm caused a blackout in Cox’s Bazar after bearing down on the coast on Tuesday evening.

The cyclonic storm has already uprooted a substantial number of trees along the Cox's Bazar coast. It caused significant damage to numerous small shops located near the beach area.
