What directions were given to Rangpur Awami League leaders?

  • Form full committee within seven days
  • Resolve internal conflict
Update : 12 Oct 2023, 08:23 PM

The Central Committee of the ruling party on Wednesday held a three-hour-long closed-door meeting with leaders from the Rangpur district Awami League, its metropolitan, and three upazilas.

The meeting was held at the Awami League’s central office in Dhaka.

Information and Communication Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Presidium Member Shahjahan Khan, and Rangpur Division Organizing Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi were present at the meeting.

The directions

The Central Committee of the ruling party directed the Rangpur district and metropolitan Awami League to approve six thana committees and form a full committee within seven days.

Apart from forming thana committees, the central leaders have directed the Rangpur unit Awami League to form a three-member investigation committee to resolve the internal conflict between the two upazilas - Pirgacha and Kaunia.

Simultaneously, directives were issued to recommence the membership drive, which had been inactive for an extended period.

The central leaders also urged all members to collaborate and support the party's chosen candidate in the upcoming elections.

According to the sources at the meeting, after the formation of the Rangpur City Corporation, the party's organizational activities have been lagging, primarily because the six thana committees of the Metropolitan Awami League have not been formed for an extended period.

The final decision regarding the proposed Mithapukur Upazila Committee of the district Awami League will be informed later as Ashikur Rahman, MP of the constituency, was abroad.

Reasons behind the meeting

The meeting was crucial given the impending parliamentary elections.

The dissolution of the Rangpur District and Metropolitan Committees, and the formation of a convening committee, were prompted by the tarnishing of the party's image due to the confiscation of the security deposit of Awami League's nominated candidate, Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia, in the Rangpur City Corporation elections.

Consequently, the party's position in the six parliamentary constituencies of Rangpur city and district was thoroughly discussed.

Furthermore, the meeting also addressed various issues, including infighting among the leaders of the newly formed convening committees of the Metropolitan and District Awami League.
