Man caught trying to go to Singapore illegally in shipping container

  • He entered Chittagong port on September 24
  • Hid inside the empty container of a vessel
  • Handed over to police

The Chittagong Port Authority has arrested a man for trying to illegally go to Singapore hiding in an empty shipping container.

Liton Molla , 23, a driver by profession, has been put under arrest.

Liton was caught by the crew in mid-ocean en route from the port to Singapore. Later, Chittagong Port Authority brought him to the country from Singapore and handed him over to the police.

On Friday, Chittagong Port security department inspector, Nashir Uddin Ahmed, filed a case against him and handed him over to the police station, said Sanjay Kumar Sinha, officer-in-charge of the Bandar police station.

He said Liton Molla illegally tried to go to Singapore by hiding inside a container. While the ship was mid-ocean, Liton came out of the container, looking for food.

He was caught by the ship's crew. He was arrested and kept in the custody of the ship's captain Hai Phong.

According to the statement, the accused Liton entered Chittagong port at 5.23pm on September 24 through CCT-2 gate. According to the previous plan, Liton climbed over the railing behind the vessel MV HAIAN VIEW and hid inside the empty container of the vessel to go to Singapore illegally.

Police also seized a port entry card, a driving license, Tk3,000, a mobile phone set and a wallet from his possession. He was handed over to the court.

According to port sources, a total of 11 people tried to go abroad illegally by hiding inside empty containers from Chittagong port in the last 13 years.

Two of them died and nine were brought back alive.
