Patuakhali Bauphal upazila unit Awami League General Secretary Abdul Motaleb Hawlader has faced criticism for a Facebook post in which he suggested that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia should be considered for overseas medical treatment.
Local Awami League leaders and activists have demanded that he be expelled from the party.
"BNP leader Khaleda Zia should receive treatment abroad even if the law is changed for political reasons." he wrote on Saturday.
Meanwhile, BNP leaders and activists have thanked him for the post.
Abdul Motaleb Hawlader said: "Sending Khaleda Zia abroad will prove once again that Sheikh Hasina is the mother of humanity. I wrote the post for political reasons, and I don't see anything wrong here.”
Patuakhali district unit Awami League General Secretary Abdul Mannan said: "This is his personal comment. Still, we're looking into it. Awami League will not take responsibility for the individual.”
Meanwhile, Patuakhali district unit Awami League President Kazi Alamgir Hossain said he did not like the post. “He will be asked to show cause in this regard and organizational action will be taken against him.”
On Sunday, Law Minister Anisul Huq rejected the application filed for requesting BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s overseas treatment.
The minister said Khaleda Zia must go to jail before she can go abroad for medical treatment.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also said Khaleda Zia must go back to prison before seeking approval for treatment abroad.
On September 25, Khaleda Zia's younger brother Shamim Iskander met Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and filed an application to send the BNP chief abroad for treatment.
The Ministry of Home Affairs then sent the application to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
