An elderly man died in a gas line explosion in the South Middle Halishahar area under Bandar police station in Chittagong city.
The man’s wife also sustained burn injuries during the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Abdul Khalek, 65, son of the late Abdul Munaf.
The injured was identified as Anwara Begum, 60.
The incident took place at around 2am on Monday, said Nurul Alam Ashek, in-charge of the police outpost at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
He said that two individuals with burn injuries were brought to the hospital, and were admitted to ward number 36.
However, Abdul Khalek succumbed to his injuries, he added.
Bandar Fire Station's Senior Station Officer Shamim Mia told Dhaka Tribune that the fire broke out at around 1:30am on Monday.
“Upon reaching the spot, our team immediately initiated efforts to extinguish the flames. We successfully rescued two individuals who were then transported to the hospital. Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident was caused by a gas line explosion.
The extent of the damages will be determined as the investigation progresses, he added.
