Mymensingh and Dhaka Divisions lead in providing quality primary education across the country, while Sylhet Division struggles with the lowest educational standards.
The survey findings were disclosed at a workshop in Cox's Bazar, focusing on the National Campaign Strategy for National Student Evaluation 2022. The survey was a collaboration between the Department of Primary Education and Unicef.
Primary and Mass Education Ministry Secretary Farid Ahmed said: “This information will help in adopting strategies to improve primary education nationwide.”
He said: "The government is taking various steps to increase the quality of primary education in the country. Primary schools are being developed as child-friendly educational institutions. Sports spaces are being kept in every primary school. Various initiatives are being taken to prevent dropout, including arranging lunch for students."
The secretary said: "This survey is conducted according to international customs and rules. The survey was supposed to be conducted every two years, but after 2017, it was done in 2022. This was not possible due to the coronavirus pandemic. The survey will be conducted again in 2024. This survey is about literature (Bengali) and mathematics. Internationally, these two topics have also been linked to science. Efforts are on to do the same in Bangladesh."
He said: "The results and comments of this survey will be presented at the national level and it will be possible to have a more sustainable plan in the future. That's what we want to accomplish in our mission of 2041. Our state wants to move towards smart citizens, smart societies, smart economic systems. "
During the workshop, the importance of active involvement of teachers, headmasters, and field-level mentors in participating effectively in the evaluation program for primary-level students was emphasized.
