Waterlogging halts traffic on Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway for second day

  • Four missing after Satkania boat capsizes
  • Chittagong, surrounding areas experiencing rainfall since Thursday
  • Three deaths reported in Chittagong due to flooding
Update : 09 Aug 2023, 04:49 PM

There was no vehicular movement on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway for the second consecutive day on Wednesday due to severe waterlogging caused by torrential rains for the last few days.

The road closure has not only disrupted the transportation network but has also led to the suspension of communication between Bandarban and Chittagong.

Following days of persistent rainfall, road communication between Chittagong and Bandarban was halted on Monday.

Subsequently, the communication link between Chittagong and Cox's Bazar was severed on Tuesday morning due to the mounting water levels.

The situation was exacerbated by a rise in water levels at Hashimpur, Satkania Keranihat in Chandanaish, and the Bajalia area of Bandarban, ultimately resulting in a complete cutoff of communication along these routes.

Chandanaish acting upazila nirbahi officer Zimran Mohammad Sayek said various areas along the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar road in Chandanaish, including Hashimpur, Dohazari, and Keranihat remain underwater.

Some locations are reportedly experiencing water levels as high as knee to chest height, rendering them unusable.

Boat overturns in floodwater, four missing

A boat capsized in the flood-affected region of Satkania in Chittagong, resulting in four people, including three children, going missing.

The incident took place on Wednesday in South Charati village of Charati Union in the upazila, said Ruhullah Chowdhury, chairman of Charati union parishad.

He said that the boat carrying eight people was met with the accident as it overturned due to strong currents in the water.

Despite efforts to rescue all passengers, three children and another individual could not be saved, said the chairman

Chittagong and its surrounding areas experienced rainfall starting from the evening of Thursday.

After two days, the rains turned into downpours.

Rainfall since Sunday led to abnormally high tides and rainwater from upstream inundating various upazilas of Chittagong.

Within a span of two days, the situation escalated into a full-fledged flood scenario. Rising water levels on the Satkania and Chandanaish highways prompted the closure of road communication with Cox's Bazar and Bandarban.

In response, members of the army and navy were deployed to assist flood-affected residents in Satkania and Lohagara upazilas.

Three deaths have already been reported in Chittagong due to the flood situation.

A five-year-old child named Mejbah died when the wall of his mud house collapsed in ward No 2 Bailgoon of Banshkhali on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, the body of missing farmer Shahed Islam Babu was discovered two days after he fell into a canal of the Halda River at Urkirchar in Raozan upazila on Monday evening.

In another incident, Nipa Palit, a second-year student at Hathazari Government College, met a similar fate. She fell into the water while en route to an examination venue in the Islamiya Hat Badamtal area of Hathazari Upazila on the same morning.
