Mymensingh newborn found alive after death declaration, survives for 9 hours

A newborn girl, who started moving four hours after being declared dead by the doctors at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, died on Tuesday night.

The child died at 12 midnight while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Confirming the matter, Professor Dr Nazrul Islam, head of Department of Neonatal Ward in the hospital said that the child who was on life support breathed his last at 12am. Later the body was handed over to the family. 

The newborn was declared dead in the neonatal ward of the hospital around 11am and started moving on the way back home around 3pm. 

After that, the relatives brought the child to the hospital again. Later, the baby was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

According to sources, Halima Khatun, wife of Saiful Islam, a resident of the Barma area of Trishal upazila of Mymensingh, was admitted to the gynaecological ward of the hospital Sunday evening. Later that night, Halima gave birth to a premature daughter on that day. The newborn was kept in the NICU for treatment. 

The assistant registrar of the neonatology department declared the newborn dead at around 11am on Tuesday.

Saiful Islam, the father of the newborn, said: “My relatives at the hospital were informed that the baby had died. After I was informed of this, I rushed to the hospital from Trishal and left the hospital with the death certificate.”

“My baby suddenly started moving and breathing heavily on the way home. Later, we went back to the emergency room of the hospital and from there the baby was sent to the NICU.”

After the baby’s death, he said that the doctors at the hospital tried their best to save his child.
