Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that her government is committed to implementing the highly anticipated Teesta mega plan, addressing the long-awaited issues of Teesta River water sharing.
Speaking at a large rally in Rangpur Zila School ground on Wednesday afternoon, organized by the Rangpur district and city unit of the Awami League, the party president declared her intent to move forward with the project.
Also at the rally, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, a lawmaker of Rangpur, praised the premier. “We have nothing more to desire, as the prime minister has already given us a lot.”
He then expressed his desire for the immediate implementation of the Teesta mega project, stating: "We want the Teesta mega project to be implemented now."
Teesta River water sharing has been a significant and unresolved issue in the region.
Initially, the Bangladeshi government sought to settle the water share of the Teesta with neighbouring India, but progress has been slow.
Subsequently, the government considered long-term water management in the Teesta River area with financing from China, but this has not yet received final approval.
In his address, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Qader highlighted Sheikh Hasina's success in settling the Ganga river water treaty and expressed confidence that she would also complete the Teesta project.
“Sheikh Hasina has settled the Ganga river water treaty, and she will complete the Teesta project as well,” he said.
Later in her speech, Premier Sheikh Hasina reiterated her commitment to the Teesta mega plan, reinforcing her government's determination to see it through.
