At least 21 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami have been detained allegedly for attacking police during a rally in Chittagong on Friday.
The incident took place in the Chowmuhani area under the Doublemooring police station in the city after Jummah prayers.
Two policemen, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Mukul Chakma and Constable Md Musa of Doublemooring Zone of CMP, were injured in the clash.
A vehicle carrying the officers was also vandalized by Jamaat-Shibir activists.
Sakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Doublemooring Model police station, said Jamaat-Shibir marched towards Chowmuhani area without permission “The group attacked police and threw bricks at them. Later, the police resorted to baton charge to disperse them.”
He added that the detainees are currently being interrogated.
Meanwhile, Jasim Uddin, deputy commissioner (West Zone) of CMP said the Jamaat-e-Islami leaders took out the procession, and when the police chased them, they attacked the officers.
Jamaat-e-Islami leaders could not be contacted over the phone.
The Jamaat-e-Islami had announced to hold a protest rally on Friday earlier, but, the police did not allow the procession.
