The body of an elephant calf, estimated to be one and a half years old, was found in the Duillajhiri region of Chambal union within the Banskhali upazila of Chittagong.

The locals spotted the young elephant at around 7am on Saturday and promptly notified the forest authorities, said Forest Department's Jaldi range Ranger Md Anisuzzaman Sheikh.

Upon hearing the news, the forest officials hastened to the scene and retrieved the body of the deceased elephant.

"After the locals' tip-off led us to the elephant's body, we conducted a post-mortem examination. The initial assessment suggests that the young elephant died from a fall from a nearby hill. However, the definitive cause of death will be ascertained once we receive the full post-mortem report," Sheikh explained.

A general diary has been filed at the Banskhali police station, documenting the premature death of the elephant calf.

Further investigations will provide more details on the matter, the ranger added.

Local sources indicate that wild elephants periodically leave the hilly regions of Chambal union in Banskhali to find food in neighbouring areas, particularly during the dry season.

Regrettably, their presence often results in disruption as they traverse people's homes and rice fields.

It is suspected that the young elephant fell from a nearby hill and lost its life after being pursued by locals, following its suspected stray into an illegally constructed settlement within the designated forest area during the night.
