Police on Thursday detained a man on suspicion of vandalizing an idol in a Durga temple in Brahmanbaria.
The arrestee is Khalil Mia, 36, a resident of Chatipara village in Nasirnagar upazila.
Niyamat Sarvajanik Durga Temple President Jagdish Das said at night Khalil Mia suddenly started vandalizing the temple's idol, sparking anger and discontent among members of the local Hindu community.
At one point, locals chased him down and assisted the police in apprehending him.
Brahmanbaria Police Superintendent Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain said Khalil has not yet disclosed the reason behind his action. “He is currently under interrogation. Khalil is accused in multiple cases. The matter will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate legal action will be taken.”
