People waiting to cross Padma and Jamuna rivers had a harrowing time with the authorities suspending ferry services on Paturia-Daulatdia and Aricha-Kazirhat routes early on Thursday due to dense fog, before resuming them 10 hours later.
Mohiuddin Rassel, assistant manager of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation’s (BIWTC) Aricha office, said the ferry services had been halted from 12:30am to 10am prevent any accidents owing to poor visibility.
The services were resumed once fog had dissipated and the visibility improved, he added.
More than a thousand vehicles, including cars and goods-laden trucks, were seen stranded on either side of the two routes waiting for ferries to cross the rivers, when the last report came in.
