29 arrested so far over Chandpur temple attack

Five people died following the attack on a Hindu temple in Hajiganj upazila

Police have so far arrested 29 people over the recent attack on a temple belonging to the Hindu community in Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur.

Around 5,000 unnamed individuals have been made accused in a total of 10 cases filed over the incident as of yet, said Hajiganj police station OC Harunur Rashid.

All of the arrestees were sent to jail via court orders, reports Bangla Tribune.

Meanwhile, the probe committee headed by the district’s additional district magistrate, which was supposed to submit a report within seven days, has asked for more time in the interest of proper investigation, said Deputy Commissioner Anjana Khan Mojilish.

On October 13, an attack was launched on the Durga Puja venue at the Lakshmi Narayan Akhra temple following reports of the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran in Comilla.

Three died on the spot, while two more died at hospitals. At least 50 were injured, including police officials, said police.

The deceased are Al Amin, 18, Yasin Hossain, 15, Md Shamim, 19, Md Bablu, 30, and Md Sagor, 25.

Afterwards, the upazila administration imposed Section 144 in the area to bring the situation under control. BGB troopers were deployed as well to prevent further untoward incidents.
