Six sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in Jessore

Court acquits six others as charges against them were not proven

A court has sentenced six people to life imprisonement for the murder of a man in in 2015 at in Jessore’s Baghpara upazila.

Judge Md Nazrul Islam Howlader Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict on Thursday.

The convicts are Ziaur Rahman, Abdullah, Iqbal, Alam, Kamal and Nayeem.

The court also fined Ziaur by Tk25,000, failing to pay which will lead to another year behind the bars. The others were fined Tk5,000 or an additional six months in jail.

Convicts Abdullah and Iqbal were tried as fugitives. The court has also acquitted six others in the case as the charges against them were not proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

According to the case documents, on June 9, 2015, assailants attacked Shariful Islam when he was on the way to Dhalgram village with Tk 125,000.

He was stopped on the way by the attackers and taken to one of the accused’s home, where they hit him with local weapons and stabbed him.

Hearing his screams, Shariful’s brother reached the scene and attackers fled the scene with the cash.

Shariful was taken to a hospital in Jessore and then brought to Dhaka when his condition deteriorated.

He succumbed to his injuries the next day and his brother lodged a case against 12 people over the murder.

The case documents say that the victim was often threatened by the convicts and the murder is a result of internal family conflict.
