Conflicts among the Awami League leaders in Bogra have become visible after the municipal unit recommended expulsion of 19 leaders and activists of the party including the incumbent mayor to ensure victory of the party-nominated candidate Shahidul Bari Khan Rabbani.
For the mayoral post, the party has picked Rabbani, who is not a member of the Awami League and his father Shamsul Huq Khan was the chairman of the notorious Peace Committee’s Sonatala Upazila unit during the 1971 Liberation War.
His nomination for the November 2 polls has created tension among the party leaders and activists.
Former district unit organizing secretary and Upazila Vice Chairman Zakir Hossain has written to AL President Sheikh Hasina demanding cancellation of the nomination of Rabbani.
The incumbent mayor, district unit member Jahangir Alam Nannu, is set to contest the election as a rebel candidate as he did not get nomination. He won last time as a rebel candidate.
On the other hand, the municipality unit at a recent meeting recommended the expulsion of 19 leaders and activists of the party including Jahangir, and sent a letter to the party chief seeking action.
District unit AL Office Secretary Al Razi Jewel said that they had nothing to do with the letter seeking expulsion since the municipality unit leaders sent the letter to the central committee.
Former organizing secretary and upazila vice chairman Zakir Hossain Zakir made a written request to central President Sheikh Hasina to cancel his nomination.
