The Tangail-based Rapid Action Battalion 12 (RAB) said that after going through security camera footage, investigators concluded that the boy murdered Sumaiya before trying to kill himself.
The teenager, who is a transport worker, killed the girl after failing to have a relationship with her, according to Abdul Al Mamun, the Tangail company commander of RAB’s CPC 3.
He was formally detained late on Wednesday, said the RAB officer before adding that details will be given at a media call later.
The dead girl and the boy were found in a pool of blood in the staircase of a building on the College Road in Elenga upazila town early morning on Wednesday, said police.

A teenage boy in Tangail murdered a 15-year-old girl before trying to kill himself with the same weapon, say investigators.
The body of a ninth-grader, with her throat slit, was found on Wednesday at a building in the district’s Elenga upazila.
The 17-year-old boy was found at the scene with several wounds inflicted by a sharp weapon.
The dead girl has been identified as ninth-grader Sumaiya Akter.
The boy was her classmate, who dropped out of school. He is now undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
