Two dead in speedboat-trawler collision on Meghna River

The incident left three others injured

Two people were killed in a collision between a speedboat and a sand-laden vessel on the Meghna River in Brahmanbaria late on Saturday..

Three others were injured in the accident that happened near Marichakandi pier in the district’s Bancharampur upazila, local police station Officer-in-Charge Raju Ahmed told the media.

The deceased are Mahbubur Rahman Jewel, 35, family planning inspector of Hossainpur village in the upazila and Farid Mia, 45, of Sangeeta area in Narsingdi Sadar upazila.

The injured are Ahmed Shahriar, assistant general manager, Zonal Office, Bancharampur Palli Bidyut, Sumon Mia and Rakib Mia.

Injured Sumon Mia said even after requesting several times, the driver of the speedboat, carrying 10-11 passengers, did not lit the flashlight and ended up colliding with the trawler.

All the passengers including him fell into the water. Later, locals rescued them, he added.

Severely injured Jewel was rushed to Bancharampur Upazila Health Complex and referred to Dhaka for better treatment. He died on the way to Dhaka.

Meanwhile, Farid Mia was taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.

Speedboat driver Rubel Mia, from Marichakandi village, has been missing since the incident, said the OC.

Vessels transporting sand sit low in the water and can be hard to see in choppy conditions, particularly when light is poor.
