Death toll in the deadly launch fire on the Sugandha River near Jhalakathi rose to 48 after an eight-year-old died of burn injuries on Sunday.

The child, named Tamim, was on life-support at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

He was undergoing treatment at the hospital with 30% burns, Resident Surgeon Ayub Hossain confirmed the matter.

Thirteen other injured people are still undergoing treatment at different hospitals. Two of the injured are admitted to intensive care units.

According to the police, they had information about 41 missing passengers.

On Wednesday, two bodies were recovered from the Sugandha River and another injured succumbed to the burns at a Dhaka hospital.

The deadly fire originated in the engine room of MV Obhijan 10 in the middle of the river off the coast of Jhalakathi Sadar upazila on December 24.

The blaze broke out at 3am on the Barguna-bound vessel carrying around 1,000 passengers – much higher than its actual capacity – from Dhaka and it engulfed the entire launch within 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, a FIR was lodged at Jhalakathi police station on December 27, following a complaint from the victims' side, accusing eight people, including launch co-owner Hamjalal Sheikh, for the tragedy.

Monir Hossain, a resident of Dhaka’s Bakhsnagar area, filed the complaint as four of his family members — Taslima Akter, 30, Sumaia Aktar Mim, 12, Suborna Aktar Tania, 8, and Zunayed Islam Bayezid — were still missing.
