More than 700 birds of the Sturnidae species, locally known as Shalik, were rescued from a cowshed in Mollahat upazila of Bagerhat on Sunday.

Tipped off, police raided one Kaka Mia's house at Rajpat village in Mollahat on Saturday night and found the birds trapped in nets.

Police could not arrest anyone, said Soumen Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mollahat police station.

Several nets for hunting birds were also seized during the drive.

“The son-in-law of Kaka Mia is the man who hunts the birds, and sells them,” the OC said.

The OC, however, could not name him.

Soumen also said that the accused hunted those birds a week ago by setting traps in the local canals and beels (wetlands).

Earlier in November, Mollahat upazila administration conducted drives three times in the area and rescued 70 migratory birds of different species.

At that time, two bird hunters were arrested with traps and other equipment.
