Police have arrested Gangmal Niraj, a roommate of the murdered Indian medical student Ateef Sheikh in Chittagong, in a case related to his death. Akbar Shah police station Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Hossen told the Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday that he would be produced in court later in the day. The murder case was filed with Akbar Shah police station on Wednesday over the murder. Ateef’s father Abdul Khalique lodged a FIR with the police station on Tuesday against all eight attendees of a party his son organised at his flat in the Foy’s Lake area of the port city on the night of his death. The eight accused are – Tongbram Joyotsana Debi, Gangmal Niraj, Misnam Winson Singh, Athokpam Ronald, Prabhakar Laishram, Malemnganba Mayenbham, Promesh Chakma and Sojol Chakma Moon. Apart from Paresh and Sojol, who are Bangladeshis, all the other students are from the Indian state of Manipur, as was the victim. Ateef Sheikh, 25, a final year MBBS student in University of Science and Technology of Chittagong (USTC), was stabbed allegedly by Maisnam Winson Singh, a fellow Indian and a USTC student, on Friday night after the party. Later, Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) doctors declared him dead. Maisnam was also found hanging from the ceiling in the same room and police suspect that he tried to kill himself after murdering his friend. He is now admitted to a private hospital in Chittagong in critical condition. Police say Joyotsana, who was in a relationship with Ateef, and Niraj, had both given statements saying the two roommates used to exchange heated words after drinking. The two also live in the same flat. Ateef’s parents arrived in Chittagong on Monday and have been co-operating with police and university officials with the investigation. Police took five passports in custody, including that of Ateef, after the incident. No one has been arrested in the case so far.
