Fourth phase of UP polls underway in 838 unions

The fourth phase of the Union Parishad (UP) polls are underway in 838 unions across the country. 

Voting will continue from 8am to 4pm at the in 9,224 centres on Sunday. 

Law enforcers have been deployed to the polling centres and surrounding areas to avoid polls violence that have marred the previous phases. 

As many as 295 candidates already won before voting started as they were running unopposed. Among them 48 are chairman, 112 reserved seats candidates and 135 general members. 

A total of 43, 433 candidates are vying for seats in the fourth phase of the locals polls.

The voting is being held through the electronic voting machines (EVM) in 33 UPs and all the three municipalities, reports UNB.

UNB Cumilla correspondent reports that voting in 26 union parishads of three upazilas is going on peacefully amid a festive mood.

Voters were seen standing in long queues in the morning to cast their votes.

Besides, voting to 15 union parishads in Bijoynagar and Akhaura upazilas of Brahmanbaria district and 21 union parishads of Birganj, Kaharol and Khansama upazilas of Dinajpur district is going on peacefully.

The first, second and third phases of UP elections were marred by violence and irregularities.

At least six people were killed and over 100 others injured in the 2nd phase of the Union Parishad (UP) elections held on November 11, reports UNB.
